Aesthetic Period (c1890's) Side Cabinet
Late Victorian, Aesthetic Movement bamboo and lacquer cabinet or Etagere with lacquer panels and embossed Japanese "leather" (JLP) paper inserts. Most likely manufactured in London between 1890 - 1910.
The cabinet has five open shelves, the largest of which has a lacquer panel insert. There are three lacquer panelled doors, a small panelled drawer and bevelled mirror to the centre. It stands 178 cm high by 75 cm wide and 40 cm deep.
There are small signs of historic inactive woodworm (to err on the side of caution, it has been recently treated again). Apart from this and a gentle cleaning, the cabinet is untouched and in original condition commensurate with it's age.
I have taken the conservation rather than restoration approach with this piece and it is perfectly usable and charming as is, but the buyer could also choose to fully restore it. I saw two very similar pieces which had been heavily restored on 1stDibs and on Chairish and they went for a big price. You can see the 1stDibs one here (click). And the Chairish one here (click).
